Kunene Region

The Kunene Region is situated in the North Western corner of Namibia. The Region's Northern boundary borders Angola from the Ruacana Falls down to the Atlantic Ocean. The Region is relatively underdeveloped in comparison with the rest of the country, but it also are home to spectacular scenic areas especially during the rain season.  The Kunene river in the north have two waterfalls that should be on your bucket list for Namibia, the Ruacans Falls and the Epupa Falls.  The Marienfluss is a savanna type area amidst the otherwise mountainous terrain, and for the more adventurous there is Van Zyl's Pass, a 4x4 only challenge with fantastic scenically rewards.

Opuwo is the capital of the Region and a bustling town especially around month ends when the Ovamhimba or Himba people comes to town for supplies and  proviant.  The Himba is home to the region and a sub tribe of the Herero.  Other towns in the region include Outjo situated on the C38 to Etosha National Park, Sesfontein in Kaokoland, Khorixas and Kamanjab.  These towns can all be reached by good paved roads or good gravel roads.

While in the region you might want to put these on your itinerary . . .

• Visit Ruaca Falls on the border between Angola and Namibia
• Visit Epupa Falls, it is remote but worth the effort, lodge and camping accommodation available
• For the adventure lovers with 4x4's this region has lots to offer, but rather do it with a guide or tour operator that know the terrain
• Visit a Porcupine camp near Kamanjab
• Visit the Petrified Forest near Khorixas
• Visit the Finger of God near Outjo, and while Etosha National Park is not in the region, it is only 96km from Outjo
• Drive towards Palmwag from Kamanjab through the Grootberg pass or stay over at Grootberg lodge.
